Young artist creates illustrations to benefit farmers and typhoon Maring survivors – Manila Bulletin

While art is a medium that expresses beauty and change, it can also be a tool to help others when needed. And since the start of the pandemic, where Filipinos have faced great challenges, from layoffs and food shortages to typhoons, artists are better using their skills by donating the sales of their commissioned artwork to artists. charities.

Shannen Dingal, the young artist behind the Likhalab Facebook page, does this by accepting commissioned works with all proceeds going to survivors of the recent typhoon that hit the country, Typhoon Maring.

“I started making art as a hobby and made Likhalab just a countdown to my artwork and it continued from there,” says the fourth year student. in Literary and Cultural Studies at Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP).

For this charitable work, she chose to help Filipino farm workers through For Our Farmers PH, Inc., a non-profit, youth-led, non-livestock organization that aims to help and uplift farmers. and local fishermen.

“We are facing a new calamity, one of the most affected sectors [was agriculture]”Shannen says.” I remember looking at the news and wanting to help so badly, but I’m just a broke college kid. So I decided to open another charity commission, the only way I know of. help and I contacted an organization that specifically helps farmers.

This is not the first time Shannen has used her art to help others. In 2020, along with another artist and friend Kael, they started “Iskolart” to raise funds for students, vendors, tricycle drivers and janitors stranded around PUP Sta. Mesa campus. In November of the same year, she also joined forces with two other artists for “Alpas”, to help the victims of Typhoon Ulysses.

“My family and friends have always supported me. But I don’t really have a large following on my art accounts, so the word isn’t really spreading, ”she recalls. “In fact, I have only lifted 1,500 so far and most of the clients who contacted me were foreigners. This is why this is such a huge opportunity for the cause.
